Chapter Six

It had been a month since Ryan and Amelia had started seeing each other, and their relationship had gotten closer since then, to the extent that she spent most of her nights at their place rather than at her own apartment next door. Their attraction for each other was beginning to grow into something more, but neither of them was able to address it, knowing the basis of their relationship wouldn’t allow that.

Ryan strode into the living room of his home to see Hailey relaxing on the sofa, watching a kid’s show on TV. His eyes drifted to the time on the little fancy wall clock to see it was past 7 p.m., her bedtime.

“Princess,” he called her, strolling toward the TV, and the little girl quickly got down from her chair, running over to hug her dad’s leg to prevent him from turning off the TV.

“Daddy, please, just this last one, and I’ll go to bed,” she pleaded, pouting and looking up at her dad with her puppy eyes.

“It’s bedtime, baby, and you have school tomorrow. You don’t want to be late. That’s not a good habit,” he scolded her, staring at her in all seriousness. The girl’s face fell. She knew she had to go to bed then.

“Okay, I’ll go to bed,” she muttered in a small voice, pulling away from her dad.

Ryan grinned at her attitude and reached for her, lifting her into his arms, but she didn’t giggle as usual. Instead, she continued pouting, a little frown marring her face.

“Won’t you tell Daddy you love him before going to bed?” he asked her, nuzzling her neck. This made her giggle, wrapping her arms around his head and pulling the strands of his hair playfully.

“Hailey,” Amelia called in a sing-song voice, breezing out of the kitchen with a cup of hot chocolate in hand.

Both father’s and daughter’s eyes snapped to hers with huge smiles on their faces. Hailey was smiling because her second favorite person had brought her new bedtime treat, and Ryan was smiling because the woman had managed to win his daughter’s heart with the love and affection she showered on her, but then again, his smile quickly turned heated when he noticed she was still wearing his shirt from earlier on.

“Here’s your treat, baby.” She handed it to the little girl before kissing her head softly.

Hastily, Hailey took a sip, swallowing it and moaning at the taste.

“Mmm, I love you, Mommy,” she commented innocently, shocking both Amelia and her dad.

Amelia’s eyes widened, drifting to Ryan, who had the same expression on his face. It was the first time the girl had called her that, and although it was at the tip of her tongue to confess how much she loved the little girl, she couldn’t, knowing how her dad would take it. But not wanting Hailey to feel rejected, she smiled at her and patted her head tenderly.

“I love you too, baby. Now finish up and go to bed, okay?”

Hailey nodded obediently, sipping her drink.
